basically like what i'm doing

For the past 3 years with my mac, I haven’t used the dock at all. I keep no applications on it, and only use it to monitor what is running. For launching applications, I have quicksilver. Recently, I am starting to use it as a way to keep my using my wide array of new Fluid webapps. So much fun, plus a little bit more eye candy.

College List

I have a sneaking suspicion that my college counselor doesn’t really listen to me. When we talked about what I wanted in a college, I made it clear (i thought) that I was fairly sure I wanted go south, but that I was sure I didn’t want to go somewhere with horrible winters. I also made it clear that I didn’t want to go to a tiny school, and that I thought midsized, around 5-15 thousand, would be good. I also wanted a strong, Division-1 athletic program (I really like sports) which I could root for both while I was there and as an alum.

In sending me my preliminary list, she included Macalester College. Let’s examine it, shall we?

In response to my desire for good weather, she selected a school in St. Paul, Minnesota.

In response to my desire to avoid a tiny school, she chose one with 1,750 students.

In response to my desire to find a good athletic program to root for, she picked one with a football team that lost 50 games in a row, the most in NCAA Football history. Oh, they did that in Division 3 football, not Division 1.

While it is very nice that Kofi Annan went there, and I’m sure it’s a great school, I will not be applying to Macalester College.

Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes, the ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or villify them…about the only thing you can’t do is ignore them, because they change things, they push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do. G.E.C. - Random Quotes
We bought Dad an Amazon Kindle and a flipvideo camera for father’s day. That’s a pretty good haul, but he’s been a pretty awesome dad for at least the past 17 years.*

*I’ve heard anecdotal evidence that his behavior over the previous 7 or 8 was equally excellent, however I wasn’t there, so I can’t really vouch for the validity of such rumors.

Weird Day

juliaheffernan:

I woke up this morning at 8 o’clock with the intent to go for a run before heading to work, however I promptly fell back asleep until 9 (which is usually the time I leave for work). So I got up and made a mad dash for the subway hoping not to be too late. When I got to the office around 9:45, the door was still locked. I had gotten in before everyone else before so I didn’t think it was that weird, I was just relieved not to be late. So I sat around for a while and then began to wonder why still no one was showing up. Finally at 11 o’clock I wandered into the other office to find one of the boss ladies sitting in there alone. I asked, “Is anyone else coming in today?” “Well, actually, you should sit down, Julia,” she replied. Then she went onto tell me that on Friday (one of the days I work at vimeo) the investors had pulled the funding and they had fired everyone—except they neglected to inform me of this. The boss was like well we would love for you to keep working here but we have nothing for you to do. So basically…I mulled that over for about ten minutes then decided to leave. Cait and I then had chocolate chip belgium waffles for lunch and went to crafts night at Etsy labs. So even though I sort of got fired today, I think it was pretty fun

what the hell? thats insane.

kateheffernan:

I may be wrong, but I was fairly sure she and Woz had parted ways.
